The Communication Process

Communication is the art of transmitting information , ideas and attitudes from one person to another by the use of symbols such as words , pictures , figures , and graphs .

Functions of Language

1. It can simply give an information by description , by a statement of facts or recorded data as accurately as words will allow .This is called the referential function of language .
Example:
There are 14 radio stations in Cebu City .
2. It can move or sway the emotions , attitudes and feelings . This is referred to as the emotive function of language ; its purposes may range from the representation of a mood in a lyric poem , to a propaganda piece designed to stir people to anger and hatred.
Example : Support the clean - up drive . Please keep our community clean.
3. It can attempt to influence actions and decisions .
Example :
Banawe Hotel has the intimacy and seclusion of a mountain hideway . Welcome. Stay. And be warned by our hospitality .
